THCA Percentage Is a Marketing Number, Not a Promise
The percentage on a THCA jar exists to give you a number to compare. It does not exist to give you an experience to expect. Those are two different jobs, and the hemp industry has been letting you confuse them for years.
I have watched brands treat THCA percentage like a horsepower rating. Printed big. Defended hard. Argued about like it settles something.
It settles almost nothing. Cure quality and terpene content do more work shaping what actually happens when you smoke a bowl than the number on the front of the jar ever will.
Here is the part of that arms race the industry would prefer stayed vague. The percentage printed on your flower is a single measurement taken once, weeks before you ever opened the jar. It does not update. It does not know how long that flower sat in a warehouse, how it was cured, or what it smells like the day you actually buy it.
The Percentage Arms Race
Thirty percent used to be the ceiling worth bragging about. Then thirty-two. Then thirty-five, from labs some brands seem to have found specifically because they return the highest number.
The genetics did not improve that fast. Something else did.
Same plant. Different lab. Different sample. Different number.
None of that shows up on the label. None of it is illegal. All of it is the reason two jars of the same strain from two different shelves can carry two different percentages, and tell you almost nothing about which one will actually feel better once it's lit.
What That Number Is Actually Measuring
THCA is not the compound that gets you anywhere. It has to convert to Delta 9 through heat first, a process called decarboxylation, and that conversion loses mass. THCA has a heavier molecular structure than Delta 9, so when it converts, roughly 12.3 percent of it disappears in the process. That 32 percent on the jar was never the number reaching your lungs.
It was the number before the chemistry finished the job.
The percentage also gets tested once. A sample gets pulled, usually right after harvest and cure, sent to a lab, and whatever comes back gets printed on every jar of that batch until it sells out. Moisture content at the time of testing changes the result. Which part of the plant gets sampled changes the result.
The lab doing the testing changes the result too. None of that gets disclosed next to the big bold percentage on the front label.
The Jar in the Truck
Picture a jar of 32 percent THCA flower loaded into a delivery truck in one state, headed for a shelf in another. Four months on the road and in a warehouse before it sells. The label still says 32 percent. It will always say 32 percent, because nobody re-tests a jar after it leaves the lab.
Here is what's actually happening inside that jar while it rides. Terpenes and cannabinoids live inside trichomes, the tiny resin glands sticking off the surface of the flower, and trichomes are fragile. Every bump, every vibration, every time that truck hits a bad stretch of highway, some of those trichomes shear clean off the bud and fall to the bottom of the jar as a fine dust. That dust still carries potency.
It has just stopped being attached to the flower you're going to break apart and smoke.
Terpenes are volatile by nature, which just means they evaporate at room temperature even when nothing is shaking them loose. Heat speeds that up considerably, and the inside of a cargo truck in July does not sit at a controlled 68 degrees. Every time that jar heats up and cools back down, it's off-gassing a little more of whatever made it smell like something specific in the first place.
Do that enough times over four months and the jar you open smells like flower. Not like Trop Cherry. Not like Papaya. Just flower.
Cannabinoids drift too, just slower than terpenes do. Every time that jar gets opened, even briefly, oxygen gets in and starts a slow degradation process. Light does similar damage if the jar isn't opaque or the truck isn't dark, which most of them are not. None of this shows up as a change in the number on the label, because that number was locked in the day the lab tested it.
Everything that's happened to the flower since then is invisible on paper.
The New Rotation Lands This Week

What Actually Predicts the Experience
Cure quality and terpene retention predict the experience far better than a percentage ever will. A well-cured 26 percent jar with an intact terpene profile will consistently feel more complete than a rushed 34 percent jar that lost half its terpenes to bad storage before it ever reached a shelf. That is not a controversial claim inside the industry. It is just not one many brands are eager to lead with.
How to Actually Shop for THCA Flower
Ask when the flower was tested, not just what it tested at. A COA from eight months ago printed on a jar sold today is not describing the product currently in your hand. Ask for the terpene panel, not just the cannabinoid summary. Total terpene percentage tells you more about what you are about to experience than THCA percentage does on its own.

Buy from a rotation that actually changes, not one that has listed the same strains at the same percentages for a year straight. Genetics vary batch to batch. If the number never moves, nobody is testing every new batch, and if the percentage is the only thing being marketed to you, that is usually because it is the only thing worth marketing.
Read the whole panel. Not just the headline number.
The percentage arms race is not going away. It is too easy a number to print big and argue about in a review section. But it was never supposed to be a promise about your next session, and treating it like one is how a lot of people end up disappointed by flower that technically tested exactly as advertised.

No. Decarboxylation math and terpene degradation both eat into what actually reaches you before potency ever gets a chance to. A 34 percent jar that has been sitting since spring will consistently underperform a fresher 26 percent jar with an intact terpene profile. The percentage measures potential. It does not measure what is left of that potential by the time you buy it.
Why do two batches with the same THCA percentage feel different?
Curing time, moisture content at testing, storage conditions, and terpene retention all vary even when the printed percentage does not. Two jars can share an identical number on the label and carry two completely different terpene profiles underneath it. That underlying profile is the actual variable driving the difference in how each one feels.
What should I actually look for on a COA besides THCA percentage?
Look for the test date and how recent it is relative to when you're buying. Look for the full terpene panel, not just the cannabinoid summary. Look specifically for total terpene percentage, since that number tracks freshness and experience more directly than THCA percentage on its own.
