What the Lab Report Is Actually Telling You About Your Flower

The certificate of analysis is the most important document in hemp and almost nobody reads it. The brands are counting on that. They post the PDF, they add a QR code to the label, they let the word "tested" do the marketing work it was never designed to do, and they trust that you will glance at the page and move on. Most people do exactly that. You are not going to be most people after this.

A COA is not a badge. It is a document, and documents can be read. Here is how.


What Actually Makes a COA Legitimate

Not every lab is the same lab, and not every certificate came from a lab qualified to issue one. The number to look for is ISO 17025 accreditation. That is the international standard for testing and calibration laboratories, and it should be printed on the document itself, usually near the lab's letterhead. No accreditation number means no way to verify the lab followed a validated testing method, which means the numbers below it are a claim, not a result.

The document also needs a lot number matching the product in your hand, a test date recent enough to reflect the batch you actually bought, and a sample ID that traces back to that specific run. If any of those three are missing, generic, or clearly copy-pasted from somewhere else, the rest of the document is decoration.

The Cannabinoid Panel and the Honest Number

This is the section everyone looks at and almost nobody reads correctly. Raw THCA does not get you high. It converts to active THC through decarboxylation, the process that happens when you apply heat, and the conversion is not one-to-one. Roughly 87.7 percent of THCA weight converts to THC once the CO2 is driven off. A flower listed at 30 percent THCA does not deliver 30 percent THC. The terpene panel usually sits below the cannabinoid panel, smaller font, less attention, and it is doing more work than the section above it. Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that determine how a strain actually feels, and their concentrations are measurable, listed right there in percentages most people never scroll down to see.

Myrcene above roughly half a percent signals a heavier, body-forward, sedating profile.
